outside. >> first we have allie who is standing by. >> told you it was a wild wake up call. what's happening? >> reporter: we have been out in the road since 4:30 and the rain hasn't let up. we are on cast ovally and redwood. we haven't seen drivers having a problem. the weather has caused problems on the road throughout the bay area. on 880 southbound, the driver of this truck crashed and ended up on its side. the driver said that the strong wind and rain caused him to loose control of the truck. on 580 the driver of this vehicle fled the scene of the crash after the car hit a tree. it happened during the heavy rainfall early this morning though chp doesn't know if

weather was the only factor. for other drivers out in the roads, trying to get to their destination the stormy weather created an inconvenient mess. >> especially if you are trying to travel during the holidays. it feels scary, dark, dangerous, wet, windy, that is aboutt. i hope it's over soon. >> reporter: unfortunately its not supposed to end soon. at least not before the weekend is over. you will hear from rosemary in a little bit and she will explain how long the weather will last. i have a feeling you should keep the umbrella and rain coat handy throughout the weekend. live in castro. >> and the rain is causing problems in other parts of the bay area. in marin highway 1 is blocked by a fallen tree and downed power line. the road has been shut down since three and crews aren't sure when it is going to reopen.

a woman had a very close call. a massive tree came crashing down on her carport. she said she was about to get into her car when the tree fell barely missing her. fortunately she wasn't hurt. >> chp said it's responding to dozen of accidents right now just as it did during the evening rush hour last night in the north bay. . of them weather related. they say many are driving to fast during this new set of storms. >> a lot more crazy drivers on the road. >> you noticed that? >> yes. >> they also said they are seeing a high number of distracted drivers using their phones. >> the wet weather is impacting holiday travel at airports. we just got off the phone with the airport and the duty manager said there is no significant delays right now but high winds are expected to delay arriving flights later this morning. yesterday some passengers saw

delays of as much as two hours. more than a hundred flights were canceled. >> we are taking off and landing about 180-degrees different than how we normally do and that adds to the delay. >> if you need to head to the airport today give yourself extra time. two million people are expected to pass through sfo during this holiday travel season. the san jose airport is expected to be packed with holiday travelers, the travel is up 3% compared to last year. there are no significant delays this morning to report at either of the san jose or oakland airport. >> the second stole woke me up around two and it's slipping into the south i noticed. >> and i think it woke up a lot of people. noisy. the wind. >> thunder. >> lightning, heavy rain at times. hard to escape the wind. we have another round of gusty conditions, up over the hills to about 50 miles an hour. sfo reporting 30 miles an hour

this morning. yesterday sfo reached about 43 with the gusts. giving you a look over oakland. we have overcast sykes, gray conditions and the rain continues to fall. there will be a break-in time for your holiday shopping this afternoon. take a look at storm tracker 2. this is about two hours. two hours ago to now you can see some of that heavier rain that came through the area now starting to push off to the south and east. isolated thunderstorms have been reported at times including areas in san jose just in the last half hour or so. you can see we have good rainfalling over parts of the peninsula, half moon bay, moving in to areas around san mateo. you will see this move across the bay. light rain over san jose. we have pretty good rainfalling over areas along the east bay. you can see over the hills into san ramone, 580 and 680 you can see the stretch, making the

round to danville and dublin as well as san ramone. light rain, we have light to moderate in richmond, along i- 80. it's a dangerous ride up the hill. it'll be a dangerous ride, you will need chains if you are going to the sierra. we have scattered source n will continue to move south and east. through the morning hours we will watch this as it starts to push out of the area leaving us with scattered showers for the second half of the morning and into afternoon. the winds 16 miles an hour. 16 at sfo. these are sustained winds, these are some of the gusts i picked up. 50 mount diablo. 25 over the oakland hills. here is the center of the storm. this is the low that continues to send us the waves. this is round two. it another round on sunday. the entire weekend will be pretty wet. take a look. it's this morning. you can notice how we are

displaced by a fire last night. a neighbor saw flames around 1:00. the 90-year-old inside was able to felt out safely. firefighters say they put out the fire pretty quickly and inside they say they found that the smoke detector in the home wasn't working because of a dead battery. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. >> police in emoryville are investigating an overnight homicide. the victim was shot and killed at 65th and hollis just before ten. it all happened outside a parked car. one of the cars doors was open and it's window appeared to have been shot out. we have calls in to police for more information on the victim and shooting. >> a woman has died from thursday night's hit and run crash at twin peaks. her son is mourning her loss. he spoke to us about losing his mother. he said he took her and his two friends to twin peak to see the

view. then a car sped toward them as they walked down the road. >> a pair of headlights in front of me. i jumped over the wall. after i stand up i can't find my mom. she is gone. >> his mother and friends fell over a wall and 30 feet down a hill. his friends are at hospital. police arrested a female driver two male passengers a short distance away. the drive driver is in jail. >> the last of the funerals for the victims of the connecticut school shooting will be held today. five were held yesterday. after a service for dilan hockly his 8-year-old brother released balloons. families also said good-bye to

grace mcdonald and four others. meantime we are hearing new details about the gunman. former classmates said he wore the same clothes every day and rarely spoke. he once give a presentation through a computer instead of speaking and a former classmate said he enjoyed playing a violent video game and liked using a military style assault rifle in the game, the same type of gun he used to shoot his victims at sandy hook. >> i a man is using the internet to counter the nra's controversiall plan to stop gun violence. the leadership said it wants armed officers at every united states school. >> the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. >> reporter: the 31-year-old facebook engineer has a different idea. he is behind a petition on change.org asking the cdc to

carnage. >> reporter: this repeats the sentiments of the nra who denounced violent video games. mental health experts don't agree on in video game violence increases real life violence. multiple studies have failed to show a link. people in san diego traded guns for gift cards through their police department's buy back program. hundreds of gun owners turned in firearms and ammunition yesterday. no questions asked. if exchange they got 50-dollar gift cards for rifles and shot guns and 100-dollar cards for assault weapons. one woman turned in her rifle because of koon connecticut. >> when you think of those children and what could possibly happen you want to be a part of getting the guns off the streets. >> assault rifles similar to the ones used were turned in. the guns will be destroyed.

san diego county's da plans to hold more events over the next few months. >> a marine veteran has been freed from a mexican prison after bringing a gun across the border. the 27 -year-old john hammer was returned to the united states and is back with his family. he was arrested and jailed in august after trying to declare an antique. officials say they rarely allow foreigners to bring in guns. the family and friends say they are just happy to have him home. >> this is a wonderful day for all of us, this is beyond christmas present that any of us have prayed for. >> mexico released him when they determined he didn't intend to commit a crime. he is now with his father driving texas to his home in florida. it's a long trip but they should be home in time for christmas. >> the cia is now speaking out about a movie that shows the raid that killed bin laden. the acting director of the cia

. you can hear that wind blowing, parts of ohio wake up in the dark after winds knocked out power. utility crews working to get the lights back on but some drivers had to navigate that evening drive in the dark. a light dusting of snow also fell overnight adding to the cold conditions. in michigan a winter storm caused havoc on the roads, crashes were reported all effort detroit area including

several that involved police cars. more than 19 inches of snow fell in some parts of michigan thursday and friday knocking out power to at least 142,000 homes and businesses. >> in wisconsin, green bay packer fans grabbed shovels to help clean up the field after a major snowstorm there. more than a foot of snow needed to be cleared. for years they have asked fans to come help shovel during massive blizzards. yesterday some lined up for more than four hours before the project was scheduled to start. those who did get a shovel got paid ten dollars an hour. >> without these people helping we couldn't dot. we have 650 people right now. we have 13 people on our staff just supervisorring it. we are moving a lot of snow. we couldn't do it without the public. >> and because of the fan effort the field is ready to go for tomorrow's game when the packers host the titans. >> hopefully they get to go

watch the game. we talked about how the storm woke us up over night. it was booming. it's still booming. we see allie just enduring that wind and rain. how long will it last? >> it's a morning event. we will actually see breaks in the rain. few scattered showers, we aren't done completely but this is the worst of it for round wolf giving you a look at storm tracker 2. you can seat time l aps e. if it woke you up this is why. it'll eventually head in to the sierra. we are continuing to see just a few light showers but over the hills we are picking up more moderate rain. in and around redwood, wood side you may becoming in to some moderate rain in the next 15 to 20 minutes or so. off to the east bay we continue right around san ramone, danville into dublin. we have this line of moderate rain that will stretch into the area in the next 15 to 20 minutes. this system is continuing

southeast. light to moderate rain. the winds are starting to die down. this will shift south and east. you can see north of santa rosa. plenty of light rain. behind it, areas in clear lake, lake county starting to see a break. we will see that breakthrough the morning. you see the central valley getting dumped on. snow levels around 5,000 feet. right about blue canyon. this is moving up the hill. if you do plan to travel to the sierra, take it easy. we have that advisory still in place. the winter storm warning and you can expect white out conditions airtimes. through the morning we will see caret -- scattered showers through the second half of the day. the next round will be with us through sunset. monday, christmas eve is a dry

. it's a gloomy look outside. a wet and windy start to the holiday weekend. we are watching a series of storms as they move through the bay area. good morning. welcome back. >> good morning. stormy weather, even a little thunder and lightning has created quite a mess on the roadways. allie is live in castro valley with a look at what drivers are doing. the crashes police have responded to. >> reporter: conditions are good for drivers. it's not raining hard at all. it was a different story here about an hour ago. you could call it a downpour.

the intersection is castro valley and redwood road. you will still need the umbrella. we have seen a few people walking. in oakland, near the airport earlier this morning when it was still dark out drivers had the wind shield wipers going as they went through rain soaked streets. in san leandro, water pooled up in the parking lot. there were a lot of puddles, not crazy or dangerous but it was inconvenient for drivers as rain continued to come down. the wind and heavy rain caused big problems for drivers earlier this morning though on the 880 southbound. a driver flipped his truck on its side, happened on the broadway on-ramp. he wasn't hurt and the box truck wasn't carrying any cargo but he said it was the wind and heavy rain that cause him to loose control of the vehicle. for drivers and other people who couldn't avoid being in the rain this weather they say is a big inconvenience. >> i got christmas shopping

done but i have to work. i'm an emt. >> i don't like it i never did like the rain. i -- i'm healthier in the summer. >> reporter: now again no problems out here in castro valley. the rain has let up and as you heard rosemary say there is supposed to be breaks in the weather. we are getting word of a off ramp on the southbound pleasant hill road -- the on-ramp on southbound pleasant hill road onto eastbound 24, that is closed because of flooding in the area and the chp has called caltrans out to help them get that situation figured out. pleasant valley road onto westbound 24. >> happening now a mudslide blocking highway 128 in napa county. both directions of state highway 128 are blocked near rag canyon road. there is no estimate on when that will reopen in that area.

flooding also closed highway 1 yesterday. you can see a truck was stranded in the rushing water. the roadway reopened last night. mountain view drive in lafayette has reopened after it was shut down because of a sink hole. crews feared it would take months to repair the damage from heavy rain earlier this month but after nine days of around the clock work the road was ready to reopen yesterday. a sink hole 15 feet deep opened in that road when a pipe became clogged with debris from the storm drain there on december 2nd. >> we have been watching the chp log for you this morning and lots of little spin outs and problems on the roadway. expect maybe if the mall is any indication, i was there yesterday. a lot of people will be headed out. >> we will be there. >> i say go in the afternoon. if you can hold off i would. we have a lot of ponding,

ramone seeing light to moderate rain into vallejo, along i-840. it's a tough drive. it's extremely tough. be very careful if you are going to the sierra. into santa rosa, take a look at the north bay. still experiencing light rain. look north of santa rosa. we eventually will begin to see them. scattered showers in the forecast meaning periods of rain but also periods where we are dry for your saturday afternoon. the winds really picking up but now starting to relax. the gusty conditions come along with the front. now that's starting to move south. the winds are starting to die down. sfo still reporting 16 miles an hour. if we go over to the sierra i will give you a look at what's happening there. the snow level right about 5,000 feet. right at blue canyon. you can expect chains action the entire weekend. this is the second in three storms, one yesterday, one today, one tomorrow.

-- be are going to need to put on the chains. here is a look at what drivers were dealingw. the snow caught many by surprise causing them to pull over and chain on up. the chp responded to multiple spin outs and white out conditions that forced the highway to close for a time. >> lot of wrecks, lot of traffic jams, hard to get anywhere. >> despite the high number of spin outs, no serious injuries reported. the crashes are a reminder of the need to increase your following distance. >> a 71-year-old died at squaw valley resort. the skier hit a tree. the run opened thursday for the first time this season. this is video of conditions at the valley at the time of the accident. you can see visibility pretty low. we were told the skier was wearing a helmet but so far his name hasn't been released. >> new, a plane has landed

safely at philadelphia international airport after making an emergency landing due to smoke. it was detected shortly after takeoff and the pilot returned to the airport. passengers deplaned while the crew searched but the source wasn't found. the flight was healed to cleveland. >> police in california say they have arrested a teen for planning a school shooting. the teen allegedly plotted to shoot staff and a classroom of students. the boy eluded to his plans as police investigated him for pulling a knife on his parents on sunday. the fbi said its searching his computer for evidence. a 14-year-old was arrested on thursday for a similar alleged plot in visalia and tulare county. the school district said he threatened to shoot up mount whitney high school. investigators believe it was part of a gang initiatation. he is being charged with making

terrorist threats and gang enhancement. the schools have increased security. >> the nra has called for armed guards in every school but many districts say those officers are already there. oakland, san francisco, san jose all have armed police. it costs about $5 million for 20 armed officers and 80 site supervisors. >> we have taken the approach but it's at a cost. it comes at a steep cost. when you talk about loss of supporting programs through music, the arts. >> the officials say they couldn't pay to expand the security program to all 50 schools. >> instead of paying armed officers, some people think teachers should be the one with the guns. a store in little rock arkansas is now offering free gun training classes to teachers.

more than 50 people have signed up. teachers aren't allowed to have guns on campus but in arkansas lawmakers is considering a bill to let them. >> a 22-year-old is now facing charges in connection with a deadly home invasion robbery at a mansion. raven dixon was arrested on tuesday on suspicious of conspiracy to commit murder with a gang enhancement. a businessman was found dead and his wife was beaten at their home on november 30th. police say they believe the robbery was not random and that a suspect or suspects may have had some kind of connection to the victims. >> a fast moving fire destroyed an apartment and damaged three others in redwood. it starts yesterday afternoon in a six unit building on laurel. by the time firefighters arrived everybody had evacuated. the cause is under investigation movement

bridge. it's expected to be a busy day on the roadways, filled with holiday shoppers c, hp is warning people to slow down. this truck ended up on its side on southbound 880 in oakland. the driver said it was raining hard and that the next thing he knew he lost control. the truck fell over near the broadway exit. two people were inside. they weren't hurt. police are searching for the driver who fled the scene after crashing a car into a tree early this morning. it happened on 580 in oakland. it was raining pretty hard at the time of that accident but the chp doesn't know if weather was a factor in the crash. the rain also causing problems in other parts of the bay area. in marin highway one is blocked by a fallen tree and downed power lines. the road has been shut down since 3:00. there is no estimated time on when it'll reopen. a woman also had a very

close call, a massive fir tree came down on her carport. she said she was about to get into her car when this hundred foot tall tree came down barely missing her. fortunately she was not hurt. >> the wet weather is also impacting holiday travel at bay area airports, high winds are expected to delay some arriving flights this morning. yesterday passengers saw delays of as much as two hours because of the weather. more than 100 flights were canceled by the end of the day. >> taking off and landing, about 180-degrees difference than how we normally do it. that adds to the delays. >> if you do need to head to the airport today make sure to give yourself some extra time, remember two million people expected to pass through sfo during this holiday travel season. the san jose airport also expected to be packed with holiday travelers this weekend. holiday travel at the airport is actually up 3% compared to last year. fortunately right now in

we will see another line of rain by about ten. then by one, two, three, we aren't dry but we are seeing breaks, it won't be the steady rain, scattered source, by sunday we are looking at the next system pulling in. i will show you that extended model in just a little bit but this is what we are expecting. rainfall, high surf advisory and winter storm warning for the sierra. >> a san rafael resident was displaced by a fire overnight. a neighbor saw flames coming from the roof around one this morning. the 90-year-old inside was able to get out safely. firefighters say they put out the fire pretty quickly and they say inside they found that the smoke detector wasn't working because of the dead battery. the cause of the fire is under investigation. police in emoryville are investigating an overnight homicide. the victim was shot and killed at 65th and hollis just before ten. the shooting happened outside of a parked car.

one of the car doors was open and it's window appeared to have been shot out. we have calls in to emoryville police this morning looking for more information on the victim and the shooting. >> a woman has died from thursday night's hit and run crash on twin peaks and her son, mourning her loss. he spoke to us about losing his mother. he said he took her and his two friends to twin peaks to seat view and then a car sped toward them as they walked down the road. >> the pair of headlights, in front of me. so instinct i just jumped over the wall. after i stand up i can't find my mom. she is gone. >> his mother and friends fell over a fall and fell 30 feet down the hill. his friends are in the hospital. police arrested the female

driver two male passengers. officers say the driver is in jail. >> the last of the funerals for the victims of the connecticut school shooting will be held today. five funeral its were held yesterday after a service for 6- year-old dillon his 8-year-old brother released balloons for each victim. families also said good-bye to two more students, and two staff members. meantime we are hearing new details about the gunman. former classmates say he wore the same clothes every day and rarely spoke. he once gave a presentation through a computer instead of speaking. a former classmate said he enjoyed playing a violent video game, one of the weapons he liked to use in the game was a military kyle assault rifle. the same type of gun

senate rain has been coming down hard all night and this morning. right now we are tracking conditions around the bay area. good morning. well bump back to mornings on two. >> police and chp have responded to several collisions and other problems. allie is in lafayette where a freeway on-ramp has been shut down because of flooding. we will check in with her. we also want to tell you about

mountain view drive which has reopened after it was shut down. crews feared would take months to repair the damage. after nine days of round the clock work the road was ready to reopen yesterday. a sink hole 15 feet deep opened in that road when a pipe was clogged with debris. right now mudslide is blocking in napa following heavy rain. both directions of state highway 128 are blocked just south of the lake. no estimate on when that is going to reopen. and several thousand people in the bay area are without power right now. most of those are on the peninsula and in the south bay. pg&e said its working on some of the outages in the south bay affecting more than 1700 people. >> some parts of the sierra could get up to five feet of snow this weekend. all that snow is great news for skiers but has led to back ups and accidents. want to try to give you a live

look at traffic near king vale. it's about 6100 feet. moving, maybe slowly inching toward lake tahoe and all the resorts up there. chains right now currently required on all vehicles from one mile east of baxter to truckee want to show you what drivers were dealing with yesterday. the snow caught many by surprise causing them to pull over and chain up. the chp still responded to multiple spin outs and white out conditions forced the highway to close for a short time. >> lot of wrecks, lot of traffic jams, just hard to get anywhere. >> now despite the high number of spin outs no serious injuries were reported. officers say the crashes are a reminder of the need to increase following distance in icy conditions.

a 71-year-old ski irdied at squaw valley, he hit a tree on the west face of an advanced run, that run opened thursday for the first time this season. this is video of conditions at the time of the accident. you can see visibility was quite low. we were told that the skier was wearing a helmet, his name hasn't been released. >> we want to go back to allie live in lafayette where there were problems there. >> this is an example of the mess heavy, nonstop rain can make this is the on-ramp from pleasant hill road. this entire area was closed because of flooding. this is what it looked like. caltrans crews tried to unclog the drains that had blocked the on-ramp.

it was unpassable and the nonstop rain has caused problems for drivers on bay area roads all morning long. we have this video we want to show you of an overturned car. this happened around 7:00, on 580. the driver had injuries and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance and paramedics put a cover over her to keep her dry. she is expected to be okay but she explained she lost control, and she blames the heavy rain and low visibility. another driver had problem when is he flipped his truck onto its side. he wasn't hurt and the truck he was in wasn't carrying cargo. he said the wind is what made him loose control. >> scary, that's aboutt.

>> reporter: overnight the driver of this vehicle fled the scene of the crash. after his car plowed into a tree. it happened during the heavy rainfall early this morning. other chp doesn't know if the weather was the only factor in that crash. out here live you can see the caltrans crews -- this is pleasant hill road, they are still in the process of scooping up a lot of mud. there is a bit of a mudslide here and earlier this morning all the -- the on-ramp was soaked with floodwaters because of that heavy rain. caltrans crews say they expect to have a very busy weekend with a lot of rain and weather expected throughout the weekend. >> new the chief probation after for san mateo sunday investigation for possession

child porn. stewart force was booked in to jail and put on leave yesterday. he is being questioned by law. police in northeast california say they have arrested a teen for planning a school shooting. the 15-year-old allegedly plotted to shoot a class full of students. the boy talked about it as police were investigating him for pull age knife on his parents. he is being held in a mental health facility. a 14-year-old was arrested for a similar alleged plot in visa, lia. his school district said he threatened to shoot up mount whitney. investigators say it was part of a gang initiatation and the boy is charged with making terrorist threats. the high schools have increased security. >> the nra has called for armed guards in all united states schools and many say those officers are already in

place. oakland, san francisco, the west contra costa school district all have armed officers. it costs about $5 million for 20 armed officers and 40 site supervisors. >> we have taken the approach but it's at a coast. it's at a steep cost when you talk about loss of supporting programs for music, its arts. >> the officials say they couldn't pay to expand their armed security program to all 50 schools. instead of paying armed officers, some think teachers should be the ones with the guns. a store in arkansas is offering free gun trainingto teachers. more than 50 have signed up so far. teachers not allowed to have guns on campuses there but an arkansas lawmaker said he is writing a bill looking to give them that opportunity.

>> a woman is facing charges in connection with a deadly home invasion robbery. raven dixon has arrested tuesday on suspicious of conspiracy to commit murder with a gang enhancement. businessman was found dead and his wife was beaten at their home. they believe the robbery was not random and that the suspect or suspects may have had some kind of connection with the victims. they have not said how or if dixon knew the family. >> sheriff deputies say they believe a woman and her ex- boyfriend hid his father's body for two years so that they could keep receiving pension benefits. the body was found december 2nd in vallejo. deputies arrested the son and his ex-girlfriend earlier this week but they have been released. the da has not yet filed charges pending a further investigation. a man accused of sexually

assaulting his patients and preforming illegal cosmetic procedures has been ordered to stand trial. the 49-year-old carlos guzman garz, didn't have a medical license when he did the procedures. some of his patients also said that they were assaulted. he faces up to 30 years in jail if convicted on all counts. >> a ban on a therapy that's supposed to set gay teens straight has been blocked. it was supposed to be outlawed january 1st but an appeals court temporarily blocked the therapy. the court said the law should get a feel hearing. >> chevron has agreed to pay 14 5,000 dollars in fines for problems at its refinery in richmond. the fines linked to more than 25 air quality violations.

francisco, attempting to show you the tower. we have plenty of gray skies a soggy start to the day. >> all right. check out this story. a ups driver was caught on camera stealing a package that had been delivered by fedex. that package contained an i-pad and was dropped off at a texas home. the ups worker came to deliver another package, he saw the i- pad and came back a few minutes later and took it. ups has replaced it. the company said the worker was a seasonal employee who was fired and then arrested. three people are charged with murder in connection with a deadly explosion at a indianapolis home. authorities say a man who woman in the home along with another family member did it to collect insurance money. investigators say evidence proves that someone damaged the gas line that sparked the explosion. >> we as a public safety

community can do and must do is to devote our best efforts to see that justice is done on behalf of such innocent victims. >> authorities say they also found evidence that photographs and financial records were taken from that home before the explosion. the blast destroyed five homes and damaged 90 more. two people died. >> there is an alternative to the high speed chase. how about, the highway you aren't going anywhere chase? chp stopped all traffic in la on a freeway to catch robbers. three knew they were there because of a tracking device with the stolen cash. they went car to car until they found the device and arrested the suspects. >> new, egypt's state tv said the vice president has resigned. it comes as egypt holds its second and final part of a national voteon a national conjecture supporters see a yes vote as a chance to restore

for today. the steady heavy rain. isolated thunderstorms pulling out of here. if we get in closer, watching this, near and around san jose, where some of the moderate rain cells are falling in and around santa clara and san jose around highway 101 and east bay dealing with light rain at this time and you can see very widespread. and there is the cutoff again, beginning to shift south. we still have light rain in lafayette this morning. where we have ally rasmus, continuing the live coverage. good morning, alley. >> reporter: the lane is pretty light right now. but -- the rain is pretty light right now. but earlier this morning, it was very heavy and enough to create mud slide conditions that closed the freeway on- ramp. and the partses are zipping past it. and this is the pleasant hill on-ramp on westbound 24 in lafayette. caltrans crews spent the last hour before it reopened cleaning it up. you can see what is left over. a lot of mud in the area around those cones. and it is a big improvement though from just 45 minutes ago. when this on-ramp was still completely flooded. this is what it looked like when we arrived with caltrans

crews. trudging through knee-deep water. trying to unclog the storm drains here. >> we had a lot of rain. at one time, too much time. and it takes debris to get in these couple of trains that we have in the corner here. >> the bad weather caused a number of accidents on bay hear highways this morning, too. 580 eastbound, east of 150th around 7:00 a.m., a driver lost control of her vehicle and crashed into an embankment. she did have some minor injuries and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance but the rain was still coming down pretty heavy so paramedics put a cover over her to keep her dry. she said she lost control because of low visibility and the heavy rain and wind. now, on southbound 880, in oakland this morning, a driver flipped his truck on to its side. this happened on the broadway on-ramp. he wasn't hurt. and the box truck he was driving was not carrying any cargo. but again, he said it was the wind and rain that made him lose control of the vehicle. so back out here live on

pleasant hill road, the on-ramp on 224 is back open. even though they have some cones kind of warning drivers about some of the mud on the shoulder here. caltrans crews say with more wet weather on the way, over the next several days, they expect to be pretty busy this weekend. live in lafayette, alley rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> the rain is causing problems in other parts of bat bat-- the bay area. highway 1 in one area is blocked because of downed power lines. crews are not sure when it will reopen. and inverness woman also had a very close call. a massive tree came crashing down on her carport during the first wave of the storms yesterday. michelle pelten says she was just about to get into her car when the 100-foot tall tree fell narrowly missing her. fortunately she was not hurt. the wet weather is also having an impact on holiday travel at bay area airports. right now, sfo is seeing delays of around 45 minutes. yesterday, some passengers saw

delays as much as two hours because of the weather. more than 100 flights were canceled by the end of the day. >> taking off and landing, 180 degrees difference from how we normally do it and it does add to the delays. >> if you do need to head to the airport, give yourself some extra time to get there. and to get through the airport. 2million people are expected to pass through sfo. during the holiday travel season. well, san jose's airport is also expected to be packed with holiday travelers this weekend. holiday travel at san jose international airport is up 3%. when you pair it to last year. and there is no significant delays to report this morning at either san jose or the oakland airport. high winds have knocked out power to more than 3,000 people here in the bay area and pg&e says it is working to try to restore that power to about 700 customers in the north bay, and 2300 customers in the south bay. there are also 76 outages in san francisco, and 140 outages in the peninsula, and 271 in

the east bay. a san rafael resident was displaced by a fire overnight. a neighbor saw flames coming from the roof of the home on brett avenue around 1:00 this morning. the 90-year-old living inside was able to get out safely. firefighters say they put out the fire pretty quickly and once inside, they also say they found that the smoke detector in the home was not working because of a dead battery. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. a fast-moving fire destroyed one apartment and damaged at least three others in redwood city. that fire started yesterday afternoon, at a six-unit building on laurel street. by the time firefighters arrived, everyone had evacuated. and no winston-salem one was hurt. the cause -- and no one was hurt. the cause of that fire is also under investigation. police in emeryville are investigating an overnight homicide. the victim was shot and killed at 65th and hollow streets just before 10:00 last night. the shooting happened outside of a parked car and one of the car doors was open and a window appeared to have been shot out. we have been making calls to emeryville police this morning for more information on the victim and shooting, and we

will keep you updated. the last of the funerals for victims of the newtown connecticut school shooting will be held today. five funerals were held yesterday after a service for a 6-year-old dillon hawkly, his 8- year-old brother jake, released balloons for each sandy hook victim. families also said goodbye to students, grace mcdonald and olivia engel. school psychologist mary sherlock and behavioral therapist rachel devino were also laid to rest yesterday. meantime we are hearing new details about the gunman adam lanza. former classmates say he wore the same clothes to school every day and rarely spoke. he once gave a school presentation through a computer instead of speaking. a former high school classmate says lanza enjoyed playing a violent video game and one of the weapons he liked to use in that game was a military style assault rifle, same type of gun investigators say he used to shoot his victims at sandy hook. a bay area man is using the internet to counter the national rifle association's controversial plan to stop gun

violence. the nra's leadership says it wants armed officers at every u.s. school. >> the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. >> 31-year-old facebook engineer lucy icenberg has a different idea. he is behind an online commission on change.org asking the centers for disease control to research gun violence. >> there are about 30,000 people in america who die every year from gun violence. which is actually the same number who die from car crashes. and the cdc spend a lot of money and time researching car crashes and they barely look at guns at all. >> icenberg says the nra lobbied lawmakers to cut cdc funding and outlaw the research on gun control in the 1990s. the nra says it is hoping to get armed police in all schools by the end of winter break. an international jury for the america's cup boat race has found larry elson's oracle team guilty of spying. the team is charged with getting too close to an italian

rival's boat and taking pictures of it. for now the oracle team has been ordered to hand over the pictures. a decision on a penalty however is still pending. a san francisco church is giving away thousands of toys to children in need. glide memorial church has almost 8,000 toys that will be given out at an event partially sponsored by the san francisco giants. good morning to you. giving you a live look, a bird's-eye view of concord. i see a little peek of sunshine. rain falling in most cases. but we're on the way to improving weather for the afternoon. if have you holiday shopping to do, maybe get out and celebrate with some friends, this is the shift we're beginning to see. we've been watching it over the last couple of hours now. and santa rosa still dealing with a little bit of light rain but you can see the brunt of the storm now moving through central portions of the bay area and sliding into the south bay. with it, it is taking the wind.

so the winds have relaxed quite a bit since earlier this morning. it was noisy out there in the overnight hours with the winds just really blowing the trees around. some light rain falling around the peninsula. san mateo into redwood city. and palo alto, and woodside and into south "bay sunday." and continuing to watch moderate rain falling over santa clara, as well as san jose. you can find it along highway 101. near tully road. so this is going to continue to move south and east. that's the way it stands right now. the east bay continuing with light rain from hayward, fremont, to union city. and you've got light rain and walnut creek, san ramon, and this is your stretch this morning. slick roads. ponding on those roadway, and again, the winds, strong this morning, but again, beginning to die down. a look here. livermore, the gusts were to 24 miles an hour in the last hour. we have turned calm now. at least for the time being. overall, around the bay area, i'm just watching as they lighten up as we progress through the morning hours. sfo had wind gusts to 30 miles an hour. and those have lightened up as well. and take a look at all of that

snow. almost five feet of snow expected by the weekend. and in the snow level ride, about 5,000 feet. take a look at the foothill, placerville, being hammered right now, and that is hammered into the sierra. if you are headed into the sierra, a word of caution, take it easy out there. the winter storm warning will continue, until tomorrow night. and you know how it goes, right? you need a full tank of gas and snacks in the car, maybe even a blanket in case you experience very long delays. this is storm number two. in a series of three storms. the first one us yesterday. heaviest rain coming this morning. we will see scattered showers for the afternoon. tomorrow morning, the rain will start up early on. the heaviest rain expected between 10:00 and 3:00. if you do have that last-minute holiday shopping, you are going to find it wet out there, for pretty much the entire weekend. your best time to shop would be later today. otherwise, maybe sunday night. we will get a brief reprieve on monday. partly cloudy skies. dry conditions, but a new system going to bring us a possibility of some rain by christmas afternoon into christmas evening.

good morning to you. and welcome back. it sure is a rainy start to the morning but that rain and the winds are winding down. we have improving weather for the afternoon. >> well, the midwest continues to get hit hard by the snow. in michigan a winter storm caused havoc on the roadways and crashes were reported all over the detroit area including several that involved police cars. more than 19 inches of snow fell in some parts of michigan

thursday and friday knocking out power to at least 142,000 homes and businesses. this morning, police in pennsylvania are trying to determine why a man shot and killed three people before he was killed in a gun fight with police. the shootings happened in the town of frankstown township, about 70 miles west of harrisburg. authorities say it appears the shootings all happened at different locations. one woman was found dead at a church. a man was found dead in a home. and another man was killed after getting into a car accident with the suspect. >> we have seized some weapons. we will be exploring ownership of those weapons, how they were procured. when they were procured. we will be looking at which of those weapons was used at which crime scene. >> three troopers were also hurt. one of those troopers was shot twice in the chest but survived because he was wearing a bullet proof vest. a marine veteran has been freed from a mexican prison after bringing a gun across the border. the state department says 27- year-old john hammer has returned to the u.s. and has been reunited with his family.

he was arrested and jailed back in august after trying to declare an anti-gun -- he said he wanted to use a gun to hunt in costa rica, and mexican officials say they rarely allow foreigners to bring in firearms. the marine's family and friends say they are just happy to have him home. >> a wonderful day for all of us. beyond the christmas present that any of us have ever prayed for. >> mexican released him when they determined he did not intend to commit a crime. he is with his father driving from his brownsville texas to florida in palmetto bay. they say it is a long haul but should be home in time for christmas. a fire gutted a home in sacramento. we want to show you video of the aftermath of that fire. which started late yesterday afternoon. firefighters say some lights on the christmas tree exploded. igniting the flames. no one inside the home was hurt. but the house was completely destroyed. >> president obama and his family are in hawaii, where

they traditionally celebrate christmas. they arrived on air force one at hickham air force base in honolulu early this morning. the president was born in hawaii and one of the places he says he is able to really relax. white house officials say the president's vacation plans do not include any public appearances. now, before leaving the white house, the president and the first lady recorded a holiday message to the country. >> this weekend as you gather with family and friends, michelle and i wanted to wish you a merry christmas and a happy holidays. >> we both love this time of year, and there is nothing quite like celebrating the holidays at the white house. it is an incredible experience. and one that we try to share with as many folks as possible. >> the president says he does plan to return to the white house after christmas. and push to get a deal on the federal budget. >> and that is the focus of many people, as we head towards the new years day deadline to resolve that debate but mr. obama is not the only one leaving town before there is an agreement that would head off

tax hikes and drastic budget cuts. republicans and democrats, senators and representatives, all headed home for the holidays. house speaker john boehner used the g.o.p. weekly address to say republicans will maintain their focus on reaching a budget deal. >> i've challenged the members of our party to grapple with these issues. to make tough choices. and we're willing to. because washington is -- has a serious spending problem. this was the year, the size of our debt, all $16 trillion of it, surpassed the size of our entire economy. it is a grim milestone. >> this week, both sides continue to blame the other for not compromising. it looks more likely than ever that eastern and gulf ports are going to be shut down by a longshoremen strike. nearly 15,000 dock workers at ports from boston to houston are ready to walk off the job as early as next weekend. their union says negotiations are still possible. but no new talks are scheduled. shippers and retailers are pleading with the union and cargo carriers to get back to

talks and avert a major trade disruption that would affect half the country. the population of the international space station doubled this morning. the soyuz space capsule carrying american and russian and canadian astronauts docked there this morning. the three new crewman will spend the day getting their bearings and take christmas day off but then will start the first of 50 experiments. in the coming months the astronauts will also perform space station maintenance and unload four unmanned cargo ships. people in san diego traded guns for gift cards through the police department buyback program. hundreds of gun owners turned in firearms and amo yesterday. no questions asked. in exchange, they got $50 gift cards for rifles and shotguns and $100 cards for assault weapons. the guns are going to be destroyed. san diego county's district attorney plans to hold nor gun buyback events over the next few months. marin county wants to get violent video games out of homes just like it wants to get guns off the streets. the county is holding its first- ever gun buyback next month.

and direct attorney ed bavarian says marin police agencies will buy back violent video games and sees it as a way to reduce violence committed by young people. >> we don't need to have that type of carnage exposed to our young people. >> this echos the sentiments of the nra who yesterday denounced violent video game as a large part of the problem of gun violence in meric. mental health experts do not agree on the causes. but the marin buyback is set for january 15. the c.i.a. is now speaking out about a movie that depicts the raid that killed osama bin laden. michael mo rel, the acting director of the c.i.a. sent out a statement to employees yesterday, saying that zero dark thirty is not historically accurate. the c.i.a. and pentagon and senators diane

anyone who loves to spend time at san francisco's science museum is moving to pier 15. the last day it will be in its current location on lion street will be january 2. but it takes a lot of time to relocate so many exhibits. the exploretorium will reopen in the new home april 17. it is already a happy holiday season for the oakland zoo. it received a 1 million-dollar

are slick out there folks. this will continue at least through the morning hours and scattered showers for the afternoon. light rain continues to fall over the east bay. although areas like concord and richmond and plenty of moisture overhead. still got the clouds. you may be experiencing some light rain or drizzle but that steady rain is pulling out. rainfall totals thus far, pretty impressive over santa rosa, 2 1/2 inches. and an inch in napa and an inch in san rafael and .3 in fremont and mountain view. the numbers are very similar to how we were yesterday. upper 40s, low 50s. right now, low 50s in the afternoon. and mid-50s for san jose. and the extended forecast, getting a little bit of a break. a little bit of a lull for the afternoon. scattered showers will remain in the forecast tomorrow. another round of rain just as bad as what we have seen today. and yesterday. partly cloudy on christmas eve, dry conditions, more rain in store for christmas day. back to you. well, in wisconsin, green bay packer fans grabbed shovels to help clean up lambeau field after a major snowstorm.

welcome back. to mornings on 2, everyone. i'm mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong. let's look at the top stories we've been following all morning long. we are on storm watch. as wet and windy weather causes problems on roads and knocked out power to more than 3,000 homes and businesses. a truck did end up on its side early this morning. there you see it. that is southbound 880 in oakland. a driver also fled the scene after crashing a car into a tree on 580 near the coolidge

exit in oakland. highway 101 in marine county, is also blocked by a fallen tree. well the wet weather is also having an impact on holiday travel at bay area airports. right now, sfo reporting delays of about 45 minutes. yesterday, some passengers saw as much as a two-hour delay. due to the weather. and a 90-year-old in san rafael escaped a house fire early this morning. a neighbor saw flames on brett avenue around 1:00 a.m. firefighters knocked down that fire and found the smoke detector in the home had a dead battery. nobody was hurt. well, new this morning, the chief probation officer for san mateo county is reportedly under investigation for possessing child pornography. according to the san mateo dale dale -- daily journal, stewart force was placed on administrative leave yesterday and questioned by federal law enforcement officials. a woman has died from thursday night's hit-and-run crash on twin peaks and her son now is talking about his loss.

kae-yoo when talked about losing his mother and he took her and friends to twin peaks to see the view and then a car sped toward them. >> we saw the headlights in front of me. it was instinct, i guess, jumped over the wall. and after i stand up, i can't find my mom. she is gone. >> her mother and friends tumbled over a wall and 30 feet down a hill. his friends are in the hospital. police arrested the female driver. and two male passengers. a short distance away. officers say the driver is in jail for felony hit-and-run and felony dui. a 22-year-old woman is facing charges in connection with a deadly home invasion robbery. raven dixon of almeda was arrested on tuesday on

suspicion of committing murder with a gang enhancement. the man was found dead and wife beaten at the home on november 30. police believe the robbery was not random and the suspect or suspects may have had some kind of connection to the victims. they have not said how or if dixon knew that family. police in the northeastern part of the state say they have arrested a teenager for planning a school shooting. the 15-year-old allegedly plotted to shoot faculty members at a classroom full of students at modoc high school in alturas. the boy alluded to the plans after being investigated for pulling a knife on his parents on sunday. he is held in a mental health facility and the fbi says it is searching the computer for evidence. a 14-year-old is looking into a similar alleged plot in another county. the boy's parents say he threatened to shoot-out the high school. they believe it is part of a gang initiation.

the boy is being charged with making terrorist threats and gang enhancement. but the high school has increased their security. the nra has called for armed guards in every school and many in bay districts say officers are already in place. oakland, san jose, and the contra costa county unified school district have armed police at schools. it cost west cocoa county $20 million for the armed officers for the middle schools and high schools. >> we have taken this approach. but it comes at a cost. it comes at a steep cost. when you talk about loss of supporting programs through music and the arts. >> west contra costa county officials say they can't expand or can't pay to expand their armed security program to all of its 50 schools. instead of paying armed officers to patrol campus, some people think teachers should be the one with guns. a store in little rock, arkansas, is now offering free gun training classes to educators. more than 50 people have signed

up. teachers are not allowed to have guns on campuses there but an accu-weather lawmaker says he is writing a bill looking to give teachers that opportunity. solano county sheriff's deputies say they believe a woman and her ex-boyfriend hid his father's body for two years ago so they could keep receiving pension benefits. his body was found in an apartment complex backyard in vallejo. deputies arrested his son and ex girlfriend earlier this week but since released. the district attorney has not yet filed charges pending further investigation. a man accused of both sexually assaulting his patients and performing illegal cosmetic procedures has been ordered to stand trial. prosecutors say 49-year-old carlos guzman garza did not have a medical license when he conducted medical procedures including facelifts and liposuction at a clinic in san francisco's mission district. some of his patients also say they were sexually assaulted. he faces up to 30 years in

prison if convicted on all counts. a ban on a controversial therapy designed to make gay teenagers straight has been blocked. the therapy was supposed to be outlawed on january 1 but a federal appeals court in san francisco temporarily blocked the so-called gay conversion therapy. the court says the law should get a full hearing. there will be supporters who say it helps patients have normal lives but opponents say it is dangerous. >> a federal judge gave final approval to bp's settlement with people and businesses who lost money because of a massive oil spill in the gulf of mexico. bp estimated it will pay $7.8 billion to cover economic and medical claims by 100,000 businesses and individuals. but the agreement has no cap. so the company could end up paying more. both sides say they are relieved that the legal process will not drag on for decades. well, chevron has agreed to pay more than $145,000 in fines to settle more than 25 air quality violations in the

richmond refinery. the citations date back to 2003 and include failing to inspect for leaks and exceeding pollution limits. all of those violations happened before the august 6 fire caused by a vapor cloud that ignited. it sent 15,000 people to hospitals. financial problems at the college of marin could keep some students from receiving scholarships next year. the marin independent journal reports operations at the foundation are on hold, after the college's board resigned en masse in september. hundreds of thousands of dollars in financial aid and program funds could be affected as aud authorities look for the -- auditors look for the school's financial records. a and the president says he hopes the questions about the school's finances are addressed before it comes to awarding scholarships in the spring. a cigarette trax on the upcoming ballot. an initiative would put up the price another dollar a pack. it is not yet known who is behind the measure. a different tobacco tax last

year, it failed by less than a percentage point last year after the possession industry poured millions of dollars into fighting it. the price of milk could double next year. and that's because the debate over the so-called fiscal cliff has diverted attention from a dairy subsidy bill. that bill is designed to keep dairy farmers in business because it gives the government the power to buy milk to boost the price when it drops too low. but a new bill needs to be passed by january 1. if it is not, that subsidy reverts to a 1949 rule that could hike the price of milk to $7.00 a gallon. it would also prices on other dairy products also. firefighters in berkeley and dozens of volunteers are preparing more than 800 bags of groceries for the elder lism the firefighters say the bags will be filled with chicken can fruit and vegetables and canned goods and they will deliver the bags to homes. the man who closed out the giants second world series win in three years took some time to visit troops and their families at traverse air force

chains at that point. but again a caltrans vehicle there blocking traffic. westbound 80. kingvale. about a mile east of truckee. chains are require at that point. and of course for four wheel drive vehicles and snow tires. we're working on this one in the newsroom and making some calls to try to figure out if indeed interstate 80 is closed up to tahoe. yesterday, drivers were in a similar situation. the snow caught many by surprise causing them to pull over and chain up. there were whiteout conditions. it forced the highway to close for a short time yesterday. >> a lot of wrecks. a lot of traffic jams. hard to get anywhere right now. >> despite the high number of spinout, no serious injuries were reported. officers say the crashes are a reminder of the need to increase your following distance in these icy conditions.

good morning to you. it sure is a soggy start out there. giving you a live look, san francisco and we've got plenty of clouds still overhead. i do see a little bit of sunshine. attempting to pull through the area. we've got dreary conditions through the morning hours. improving weather for the second half of the day. scattered showers will remain for your afternoon. take a look at storm tracker 2. the storm roars through the area. early this morning. bringing very gusty conditions, winds picked up to 30 miles an hour. at half moon bay and sfo and mount diablo, 50 miles an hour gusts. the winds have since relaxed and you can see the steady heavy rain is pushing out of the area moving into the central valley and into the sierra. if we get in closer, picking up a pretty good cell over the marina. if you are in this area, perhaps just on the south side of the golden gate, you are dealing with some light to moderate rain. and meanwhile, along the peninsula, just a few hit or miss showers. redwood city, over into palo alto, woodside, and some light rain for you, the south bay continuing, light to moderate

rain. for your area. and santa claraa, san jose, highway 101, 880, the roads still very slick out there and haven't been able to dry out with the rain that moved through earlier this morning. into the east bay. livermore, light rain. fremont, but here again, it is that line. and we continue to see it shift. south and east. with each passing hour. and into the sierra, we have the winter storm warning that will continue through tomorrow night. and the snow levels ride about 5,000 feet and i-80 as well as highway 50. and it is a very hectic drive if you're getting up that way, you heard mike just say, they may have shut down the highway. will be checking on this for you. expect the winter storm conditions. meaning whiteout conditions. blowing snow. through tomorrow night. we will continue with the scattered showers here at home. if we come back, i will show you what is going on. it is 11:00 here, a line of rain pulling through, no the afternoon, so it is not finishing with the rain all together. but we will get a break. a bit of a lull for the second half of the day. best time to get outdoors and

good morning to you. giving you a live look there at the bay area. it is a great start. a rainy start to the day. but the rain and the winds are lightening up at this hour. hit or miss showers in the forecast for the afternoon. >> and we do have live team coverage of the storm watch this morning. rose mary has been of course tracking that rain and the storm systems moving through. and ktvu ally rasmus is live in

lafayette where one of the drivers, or one of the spots the drivers have had some problems with. alley? >> reporter: well, we're seeing a little bit of a break in the weather right now. there is sun in lafayette and blue skies overhead. earlier this morning the rain caused a lot of problems. this is the foray on-ramp to westbound 24. it was completely flooded earlier this morning because of a mud slide. you can see behind the orange cones where there is still some mud left out here in the road. although the ramp has been reopened. but at 8:00 this morning, this is what it looked like when we arrived. it was completely flooded. we saw caltrans crews trudging through knee deep water trying to unclog the storm drain. and the supervisor we talked to says the nonton heavy overnight road -- nonstop heavy overnight road caused mud, and weeds and debris to slide down the hill. >> the dead weeds act like a plat over the drains and it became completely flooded. chp shut it down. we got the call.

>> reporter: now that ramp reopened, but the bad weather has caused a number of accidents on bay area highways this morning, too. on 580 eastbound, east of 150th around 7:00 this morning, a driver lost control of her vehicle, went up into the embankment. she did have some minor injuries and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance and paramedics put a cover over her, as they were wheeling her away just because the rain was still coming down pretty heavily. show said she blames the weather for the accident that she experienced. saying she just couldn't see and maintain control of her vehicle. now, on southbound 880, in oakland, this morning, a very similar story, a driver driving a box-type truck, flipped the truck on to its side. it happened on the broadway on- ramp. now, the driver was not hurt. the truck was not carrying any cargo. but he also said it was the wind and heavy rain that made him lose control of that vehicle. back out here live, here at this freeway on-ramp, you can see traffic moving just as it normally would. and now that caltrans has reopened it and got rid of some

of the mud and the water that was blocking this roadway. live in lafayette, alley rasmus, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> thanks. we want to take you back to the sear are and show you a live picture -- we don't have it now but we have been monitoring the situation at interstate 80 in kingville. when we showed you a short time ago, that picture, we can see the road shut down to traffic and we were trying to figure out why. we heard there are spinouts and we heard there is a big rig that is blocking all lanes of traffic at the donner lake off- ramp. we're keeping an eye on that. chains as you know are required if you're headed up there for all vehicles. unless you have four wheel drive. with snow tires. and it looks like it is going to be a long slow drive. so if you are headed to the sierra, be prepared for it to take some time. and we have just learned that highway 128 in napa county has reopened after being shut down due to a mud slide. the slide happened near rag canyon road south of lake bariessa. all lanes of highway 128 in

napa county are now back open. in egypt state tv is reporting that the country's vice president has resigned. the resignation comes as egypt holds its second and final phase of a national vote on a new constitution. the issue is dividing the country. supporters see a yes vote as a chance to restore normalcy to the company and opponents say the no vote preserves the country's tradition and keep president muhammad morsi and the muslim brotherhood from gaining a lock on power in the country. if the constitution is aproved it does not include the position of vice president. the pope pardoned the former butler who stole his documents and gave them to a journalist. paulo gabrielle was sentenced to jail and he says he leaked the pope's documents to expose evil and corruption in the vatican. the pope has forgiven him. the vatican says it would help him find a new job and a new home.

the super yacht built by steve jobs has been impounded in amsterdam. because of a dispute over an unpaid bill to the yacht's designer, felipe stark. stark claims he still needs to be paid $3 million for his work on venus. venus will remain in amsterdam port, pending payment, by lawyers representing jobs' estate. the local analysts are watching closely to see who will run for john kerry's massachusetts senate seat if he is confirmed as secretary of state. president obama announced the nomination yesterday. analysts say former massachusetts senator scott brown who is a republican is likely to run. he lost his seat to democratic challenger elizabeth warren last month. and now there is no clear front- runner on the democrat side but analysts say several house representatives are expected to make a bid. >> iowa supreme court made a controversial decision in a case about a worker that was fired for a job she held for 10 years. melissa nelson sued for gender discrimination. after being fired for her job in a dentist office. she says she and the dentist

had started texting each other about some personal matters and when the dentist's wife found out the wire demanded she be fired. the dentist did. saying nelson was a threat to his parage. the court says it was a valid reason to fire nelson. >> it isn't really fair to the employee. and also it isn't the standard. it isn't the question whether the employee deserved it. it is what the employee's motivation, whether it is wrong but it potentially opens up some problems. >> the fired worker says she never flirted with or wanted an intimate or sexual relationship with the dentist. an army soldier is home for the holidays after a surprise reunion with his family at the airport. army specialist brian prissell and he starts running, in portland, late thursday night when he was reunited with his wife. she had come to the airport because she thought she was picking up another relative. he has been deployed for seven months and took him three days to get home from afghanistan. >> once we got stateside, it just went crazy.
